IAG Newsroom redesign

Enhancing IAG’s communication effectiveness

IAG is the largest general insurance company in Australia and New Zealand, selling insurance under many leading brands.

Challenge

Enhance IAG’s communication effectiveness through the Newsroom to make it easier for media and stakeholders to engage with the strategy and work.

Objectives

  • Redesign the Newsroom to make it more usable and engaging;

  • Create more flexible templates and options for publishing stories via the CMS;

  • Make it easier for stakeholders to share stories with their networks;

  • Improve options for media to engage with IAG and find the information they need on breaking news.

Year

2020

Team

I worked with a PO, developers and business analysts.

Approach

  • Site audit
    I completed a current site audit and mapped the information architecture.

    Customer research
    I conducted interviews with people who were both familiar and unfamilar with the Newsroom to gather their feedback using it.

    Analytics
    Checking current site performance analytics.

    Stakeholder research
    Interviews with the content producer team to discover their publishing journey and painpoints.

    Competitor review
    Analysis of competitors and similar size adjacent businesses media pages.

  • Synthesis
    I synthesised insights from customer interviews into key themes.

    Hypotheses creation
    I created a list of testable hypotheses.

    Personas
    High level goals based personas for our key audience groups.

  • Information architecture
    I worked with our BA and key stakeholder to define the information architecture and understand requirements.

    Prototype and test
    I created two mid-fidelity prototypes to test key hypotheses and usability in testing sessions. The prototype was iterated on and tested until final wireframes were approved.

  • MVP definition
    I worked with our stakeholders, developers and PO to create a prioritisation matrix and define MVP.

    Visual design
    IAG did not have a current design system or established components so I was able to put forward colour usage, type hierarchy and component foundations following the brand guidelines.

    Creating a component library
    I built out all the components and patterns in Figma.

    Developer handover
    Handover to our frontend developer team was completed in Figma with tickets created in Trello.

  • Frontend development
    Development was completed using Trello to track progress and complete design QA. Our testers would then run detailed checks across all device types and breakpoints.

    Backend development and CMS
    I worked with our backend developers to define how much control we would allow content editors to have in the CMS, and ways we could make it as user friendly as possible.

Outcomes

A more engaging Newsroom

The updated Newsroom is easier to navigate, enhances engagement and time on page, and caters to media stakeholders.

Defined and documented visual design

Updated visual design for digital to align the Newsroom to the IAG brand guidelines. These styles were then fed into Chroma to include IAG in the broader design system.

Improved publishing experience

Simplified and flexible CMS template for corporate affairs to publish stories with options for imagery, video embed and text formatting.
